From the moment Courtney Barnett steps on stage -a stage reminiscent of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit music video set- you get a definitive sense you are in the presence of a bonafide rockstar. If you had any doubt it’s quickly dispelled with her effortless movement across the fret board and cooler than cool persona.
Courtney is unapologetic as she thrashes on her guitar, whipping her hair — while simultaneously flashing a smile at her bassist — reciting lyrics “I’m not your mother, I’m not your bitch.” Her doe eyes batting at the audience, bathed in red stage light, she gets the crowd amped to sing along with millennial inspired lyrics “If you got a spare half a million you could knock it down and start rebuilding” in reference to a home improvement project from the song Depreston off her debut 2015 album.
The crowd feeds off the energy of her guitar and sly charisma. By the end of the show even the most cynical of critics is swaying, and planning a trip to the well stocked merch table after the show. Courtney doesn’t mince words, “tell me how you really feel” is the perfect title of her current touring album.
–Courtney Barnett’s tour runs until November!
