If one thing is clear in 2013, it is that the new album Slider by decker. will be crowning many of the perfunctory “Best Of” lists at the end of the year. Anyone that has heard the album falls in love with it almost instantly and within moments they declare it as something along the lines of the most authentic Arizona music to be found. This is not an exaggeration in any capacity. There is something encoded in the music of decker. that brands their sound with desert swagger, a sound defined by the very poisonous landscape that surrounds them, filled with desolation and arid heat, filled with beauty and retreat, filled with every nuance this harsh environment can afford—Slider is very much the quintessential Arizona album. It’s not because it typifies the music found within this state, but because it embodies the very state itself, it is beholden unto the environment that helped create it, mold it, shape it from red clay and quartzite sand. It stands as an early masterpiece of this year and refuses to let your soul shake it off, because this is where we live and this is how it sounds. Few other artists have evoked the spirit of the desert in such a fascinating and nearly hypnotic way as decker. has.
This Thursday, at Last Exit Live, decker. will make the trek from their Sedona reclusion to return to the big city for a show that is worthy of your attention and attendance. They will not only have support from local luminary Hunter Johnson, but will also be hosting Fat Possum Records’ Water Liars. I think in this case Brandon Decker said it best in respect to Water Liars, ”I don’t think it can be overemphasized the magnitude of having a band from Fat Possum playing one of our ‘home venues’ this is the label that the Black Keys came to prominence on–they’re pretty well regarded as one of the top three indie labels in the country . The band is good and getting great press in SPIN and the New York Times.” If you have any doubts, you can check out their amazing Daytrotter session HERE!
Their music is akin to a softer, earlier version of Kings Of Leon, filled with promise and reverie, this band is clearly catching the attention of the major media outlets in America and from everything I’ve heard, deservedly so. This will be an amazing show and, as if I have to remind you, it will be performed through the best sound system in the entire valley—check out the bands at the links below, listen to the music if you are not familiar with the artists, then show up at Last Exit Live tomorrow night and treat yourself right. I must admit I was hedging on my own attendance, but after listening to Water Liars, giving Slider another spin and checking out Hunter Johnson, I have to be there, because the music is just TOO good. See you there.
