This is where I tell you what music to check out in town, where, and when. If you don’t find one of the following bands entertaining, stop reading my blog. I’m serious. You’re not up to date on what’s going on with music, that means we’re not compatible. There is plenty of has-been-butt-rock music to be heard in this town, go see one of them. Also – if you’re going to bitch about paying covers we can’t be friends. $5 is less than a decent latte, and you can’t even buy a hot movie ticket for $10 these days. So stop complaining about not having anything to do. Go support musicians making art, and feel good about that instead of supporting that homogenized, corporate, lowest common denominator garbage on the top 40 radio stations.
Wild Ones with Underground Citites, Twin Ponies & Celebration Guns
All these bands are fantastic, and I do mean all. Go see them.
Tuesday June 10th, 2014. 8PM 18+ $8
Wild Ones – Golden Twin
The Come Ups with The Night Fires, Ana Log
I hadn’t seen or heard of The Come Ups yet but the sound like they could be cool, take a listen. I have yet to see The Night Fires or Ana Log but I do know some of the talented people in those bands, so I taking an educated guess and say this will be a good show to check out.
Of the Painted Choir CD Release
The talented Frederick Huang, boss man for Of the Painted Choir, is releasing a fantastic album called Barbarous. Then he’s calling it quits, and moving back to Tuscon. Well fuck you too Fred. Enjoy it while it lasts kids. Oh and by the way, the rest of these bands happen to be phenomenal as well, so there’s that.
Of the Painted Choir, Wooden Indian, Dylan Pratt, Chicha Dust
Thusday June 12, 2014. Doors: 7:00 PM / Show: 7:30 PM (event ends at 11:59 PM.) Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix, AZ. 21+ $5.00 – $7.00
Cover the Crescent to benefit the Lupus Foundation of Southern Arizona
Normally I don’t get too excited about covers, for reasons that may sound offensive so I’ll leave that alone. However, these aren’t your typical creatively underdeveloped or just-hand-me-the-check cover bands, they are all fantastic original bands that happen to be performing covers. If Radiohead isn’t enough foreplay for you, then I’ll offer you my non-expert opinion of Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra: the most interesting thing in music going on in Phoenix at the moment. There I said it. Anyway it’s for a good cause – so just do it.
