I entered Valley Bar last night and was introduced by a single “SHAED” neon light: I had no idea what to expect from this trio live but absorbed a lot of endearment and realness in their presence and sound. Max and Spencer both kept interchangeable artilleries handy, even switching places a few times while Chelsea effortlessly commanded vocals (despite an added announcement that she was battling a cold – you’d never know).
Chelsea’s voice: what I love about it most is how she writes to her dynamic range; she takes a small space, cradles the gentle bird in her hands and suddenly launches unexpected winged freedom and soul, over and over again. The tinge of heartbreak I felt when some of their tracks competed with their live playing melted when they played “Just Wanna See” stripped down: they changed the song to a lower key and each of their faces engaged as if they had never played the song before, or as if they were talking about their favorite places to travel and reminiscing. Their love for each other and what they do made their electronic experience feel surprisingly organic.
