After Zero Zero won the Hard Rock Rising Phoenix competition on March 21, 2013, Echo Cloud sat down with front woman Nicole Laurenne to discuss touring, the competition and a fall 2013 Zero Zero album.
1. Now that you’ve won the Hard Rock Rising in the US what are you plans to prep for the next phase? Can you explain the next step a little more for our readers?
The next step, as we understand it so far, will consist of industry judges from around the world reviewing the Hard Rock local acts online and selecting the top acts to compete in London. There are 86 acts being considered worldwide, and Zero Zero is thrilled to be one of them! Fan support will again be considered as one of the judges’ criteria, so there WILL be a chance to vote for Zero Zero online at the end of April. As always, we are planning some surprise goodies for those fans who take the time to help us out. We are so grateful to everyone.
2. Are you working on new material this year?
Yes! We have one new song mastered and another to be mixed shortly. Our goal is to have a new Zero Zero full-length record released by Fall 2013.
3. Have you honed your sound since the release of Mayday either based on fan feedback at your live show or internet plays?
Fan feedback is always essential to a band’s live sound. I have upgraded to a Moog keyboard for our bass sounds, Nick has pared down his drum kit to the bare essentials, and Michael switched from a digital pedal board back to an array of individual pedals. We’ve all gotten a lot more comfortable on stage together and honestly have a great time playing together.
5. Do you have any plans in the works for after the competition?
Our plans are constantly ongoing, regardless of competitions or releases. We have two music video shoots in the works and every day we work on new songs for our next record. We will also be returning to Southern California for five shows over the next couple of months.
6. Any tour plans in the works?
Other than regional touring, we haven’t set up a formal tour at this point. It would be nice to have another record under our belts and be a band for longer than six months before heading out on a national tour or going overseas. So we are planning for the right timing and keeping all of our options open right now.
7. If you could pick one or two of your most favorite bands national or international either big or small to play with who would it be?
Sleigh Bells and Santigold. I think their fans would get what we’re trying to do.
8. What inspired you to create Zero Zero ?
I listen to a lot of pop, hip hop, and other genres, and I really wanted a forum for all of these pop songs that kept swirling around in my head, keeping me up at night. It has been such a great release and a huge musical challenge for me to bring these ideas to fruition on a live stage. I couldn’t be more happy with the way things are going with this little side project.
Zero Zero’s most recent video, “The Pink Ones”, shot in southern California. For more information, go to their official site.
